Tsegay Triumphs as Hassan Falls: Dramatic 10K Final at 2023 Worlds
Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia won the dramatic 10,000-meter final at the 2023 World Athletics Championships after Sifan Hassan, who had won the 1500-meter prelim earlier in the day, fell during a sprint on the home straight. Tsegay led an Ethiopian sweep, with Letesenbet Gidey taking silver and Ejgayehu Taye earning bronze. Alicia Monson finished fifth, the best finish by an American in the event since 2015. Tsegay's victory came after a superb 59.01 last lap.
