HP Introduces Innovative Printer DRM Solution.
HP's latest scheme, HP Plus, hides in plain sight and removes a printer's ability to accept third-party ink, forcing users to buy "genuine" HP ink for life. The firmware update that blocks third-party cartridges cannot be deactivated, and the only way to get rid of HP Plus is to buy a new printer. The International Imaging Technology Council has filed a complaint against HP's environmental credentials, as the company's printers cannot prevent the use of non-OEM cartridges, a requirement for EPEAT certification. HP's free ink service also allows the company to remotely modify a printer's software and firmware, and users must maintain connectivity to the internet to use the service.
