NFL Implements Emergency Third Quarterback Rule for 2023 Season.

The NFL has passed a new rule that will make the role of QB3 a roster-exempt position, effective from 2023. The player designated as the emergency QB can not take the field unless both the starting and backup QB are injured, and if either of the latter are medically cleared to return to the game, the emergency QB must be removed from the contest. This rule will positively impact how the Dallas Cowboys manage their roster during the regular and postseason, and players like Will Grier will have a shot at suiting up for every game this season.

NFL Approves Emergency Third QB Rule After 49ers' Dilemma.

The NFL has approved a bylaw amendment allowing teams to designate an inactive, emergency third quarterback who will play if the team’s two active quarterbacks aren’t able to. The third quarterback will be inactive unless and until the two active quarterbacks are injured or disqualified and unable to participate in the game. The criteria are specific and unlikely to trigger with much frequency. Teams are not required to designate a third quarterback but are able to do so without consequence to their other roster spots.
