Google has launched its earthquake alert system for Android devices in India, using smartphone sensors to detect tremors. Developed in consultation with the National Disaster Management Authority and the National Seismology Center, the system provides early earthquake alerts in local Indian languages. Two types of alerts, "Be Aware" and "Take Action," are sent based on the magnitude of the earthquake and the level of shaking experienced by users. The alerts bypass notification settings and provide safety recommendations. Google claims that the alerts often reach users before shaking occurs. The company already issues flood alerts in India and introduced earthquake alerts in California in 2020.
