Canada Investigates Nike and Dynasty Gold for Alleged Use of Forced Uyghur Labor in China
Canada's ethics watchdog, the Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise (CORE), has launched investigations into allegations that Nike Canada and Dynasty Gold benefitted from Uyghur forced labour in their China operations. The investigations were prompted by complaints filed by a coalition of human rights groups. Nike denies having ties to the companies accused of using forced labour, while Dynasty Gold claims the allegations arose after they left the region. The probes mark the first investigation by CORE since its complaint mechanism was launched in 2021. A United Nations report in 2022 found that China had committed serious human rights violations against Uyghurs, which Beijing denies.
