Former Tennessee pitcher Ben Joyce makes MLB debut with Angels

The Los Angeles Angels have called up hard-throwing right-hander Ben Joyce from Double-A to replace left-hander Matt Moore, who has been placed on the 15-day IL with a right oblique strain. Joyce has a 4.60 ERA over 15 2/3 innings at Double-A this season, with a 34.3% strikeout rate and an 18.3% walk rate. The Los Angeles Angels' Double-A affiliate, the Rocket City Trash Pandas, threw a seven-inning no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds' Chattanooga Lookouts but still lost 7-5 due to wildness in the seventh inning. The Trash Pandas walked five, hit four batters, and threw a run-scoring wild pitch in the inning, and were hurt by a dropped fly ball with the bases loaded on what would have been the final out. The team won the second game of the doubleheader 3-0 on a one-hitter.

The Rocket City Trash Pandas, Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, threw a seven-inning no-hitter against the Chattanooga Lookouts, but still lost the game 7-5 after giving up seven runs in the top of the seventh inning via walks, hit batters, and errors. The Lookouts scored four runs on a dropped fly ball with the bases loaded and added three more runs via walks and wild pitches. The Trash Pandas got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Nine of the top 10 most talented Minor League Baseball teams on Opening Day 2023 are Double-A or Triple-A teams, with the Norfolk Tides and Durham Bulls leading the pack with five Top 100 prospects each. The Brooklyn Cyclones are the only lower-level team with multiple Top 100 prospects. The list also includes the Frisco RoughRiders, Hartford Yard Goats, Memphis Redbirds, Oklahoma City Dodgers, Somerset Patriots, and Akron RubberDucks. The Cleveland Guardians are the only system with two teams in the top 10.

The Cleveland Guardians' top 30 prospects have been assigned to various minor league teams for the start of the 2023 season. Triple-A Columbus has four Top 100 prospects, including catcher Bo Naylor and shortstop Brayan Rocchio.
