Valve has been cracking down on smurfs and cheaters throughout the year, and this ban wave is another step in their commitment to maintaining a fair and sportsmanlike community. The ban hammer is being used to pulverize smurf accounts and penalize associated main accounts. Valve's crackdown on cheaters has resulted in many tens of thousands of smurf account bans, with recipients receiving a note stating their account has been permanently banned for smurfing or other violations. The company aims to improve match quality and wishes everyone a Happy Frostivus Update, except for smurf accounts.

Valve, the company behind the popular game Dota 2, has taken trolling to a new level by sending permabans wrapped up like Christmas presents to players caught smurfing, or playing on secondary accounts to bypass skill-based matchmaking rules. Pro player and streamer Mason "mason" Venne was one of the recipients, expressing shock and disbelief on his Twitch stream. While some fans are enjoying the chaos, others are pleading for their accounts to be reinstated. Valve had previously banned 90,000 cheaters for smurfing in September. The question now is how forgiving Valve will be during this holiday season.

Valve is cracking down on Dota 2 smurf accounts by sending surprise gifts containing a "highly toxic" lump of coal that triggers a permanent ban. Even professional players are not exempt from this ban, as seen with Dota 2 pro and streamer Mason "mason" Venne. Mason admitted to hiring a behavior score farmer to boost his in-game behavior score, which led to his ban. He has since apologized and pleaded for leniency. Valve has taken a hard stance on rule-breaking players and has engaged in an aggressive ban wave, including tens of thousands of smurf account bans.

Valve has released the Dota 2 compendium for The International 12, but it is underwhelming compared to previous years. The compendium focuses solely on the pro scene, with features like predictions, fantasy, and basic game-related cosmetics. A bingo game and challenges related to pro matches have been added, but the overall offering lacks the usual cosmetics and extras. The compendium is still used to crowdfund the prize pool, with 25% of sales going towards it. The update also includes an overhaul of the profile section and the return of permanent supporter packs. The smaller compendium and a challenging year for the pro scene may result in a further decrease in the prize pool compared to last year.

Valve has permanently banned 90,000 smurf accounts in Dota 2 and warned of harsher punishments for those who don't play on an even field. To prevent smurfs from returning, Valve is tracking their main accounts and will punish all associated accounts if flagged for smurfing. The move is part of Valve's ongoing efforts to ensure fair play in Dota 2, following the banning of over 40,000 cheaters earlier this year. Some affected players have complained about their bans, but Valve's detection tools are generally accurate.

The Battle Pass originated from The International tournament and became a yearly content update that overshadowed other updates. Dota 2 will still have content tied to The International and its prize pool, but players won't have any new skins or accessories to grind for. Dota 2 is the first free-to-play game to retire the battle pass system.

This marks a big shift for one of the biggest free-to-play games on Earth, and Valve hopes to explore fun ideas of all scales and shapes with its players.

Dota 2's Patch 7.33 added a hidden item called Block of Cheese, which grants a 500 HP shield to the hero when activated. The shield regenerates 100 HP every second if the hero hasn't taken damage in the last three seconds. Tower or creep damage does not stop shield regeneration. The item can be crafted by collecting 18 Lotus Fruits and defeating Roshan to get the cheese. The fruits and cheese will be combined into a Block of Cheese in the inventory.
