"Unstoppable Lava: Iceland's Battle Against Volcanic Eruptions"
Lava from the Sundhnúkur volcanic system in Iceland erupted on Jan. 14, 2024, causing road closures and damaging homes in Grindavík. Efforts to divert the lava's flow using earthen barriers have been challenging due to the viscous nature of lava and the difficulty in identifying alternative paths. Previous attempts to stop lava, including freezing it with water and using explosives, have had mixed success. Despite ongoing construction of protective barriers, a new fissure opened inside the perimeter, posing continued risk to Grindavík.
