The X Window System, a windowing system for Unix, celebrates its 40th anniversary. Meta's research prototype, Flamera, aims to eliminate the need for reprojection in passthrough augmented reality (AR) headsets. Unlike current headsets that use image processing algorithms to reproject camera views, Flamera features a hardware design with 53 lenses in front of each eye, allowing light from specific angles to be focused onto an image sensor. This approach significantly reduces latency and visual artifacts. However, the display system of Flamera is subpar, with a low refresh rate and blurry image quality. While it remains uncertain if Flamera will be incorporated into consumer products, it showcases Meta's commitment to innovative research in VR headsets.
