Cargo Ship Fire at Port Newark Contained and Vessel Stabilized, Officials Confirm
The fire aboard a cargo ship at Port Newark has been contained and the vessel has been stabilized. The fire was contained to the ship's 11th deck and is no longer spreading. Dewatering efforts have been successful in stabilizing the ship, and firefighters have been working around the clock to extinguish the fire. The ship has been tilting to its starboard side as it takes on water, and crews are using pumps and poking holes in the hull to drain the water. The ship will continue to list to starboard to accelerate the dewatering process. Two firefighters tragically lost their lives in the fire, and five others were injured. The U.S. Coast Guard has reported no waterway pollution, and air quality in the surrounding area is being monitored.
