Pleasant Hill Police Defend De-escalation Tactics in Former Officer's Standoff
Pleasant Hill police successfully used de-escalation techniques to peacefully apprehend a former police officer, Chunlian Saechao, accused of shooting his wife. After a 40-hour standoff, during which Saechao live-tweeted, police decided to leave him alone under surveillance instead of forcefully capturing him. They changed tactics after deeming him not to be a public threat, but returned when he began shooting at armored vehicles. Saechao eventually surrendered to FBI SWAT teams without any injuries. He is now in custody and will face multiple felony charges, including attempted murder of a police officer.
