Ecuador's Notorious Fugitive Vanishes from Jail
Ecuador's "most-wanted prisoner," Jose Adolfo Macias, leader of the criminal group Los Choneros, has disappeared from a prison in Guayaquil, prompting authorities to launch a search operation. Macias, also known as "Fito," was serving a 34-year sentence for drug trafficking and murder. The Los Choneros group is linked to extortion, murder, and drug trafficking, and is accused of controlling the country's main prisons. Over 400 inmates have died in Ecuador's overcrowded prisons since 2021.
