Daylight Saving Time's End Linked to Increase in Crime, Study Reveals
A study conducted by Vivint, a smart home company, using FBI data from 2017 to 2021, has found that crime rates increase in the weeks following the end of daylight saving time (DST) in the United States. The study reveals that robberies and vehicle thefts have the highest spikes, with a 64.4% and 61% increase, respectively, after DST ends. Other types of thefts, including burglaries, also saw an increase. Previous studies have suggested that keeping DST all year could reduce crimes, particularly robberies. Lawmakers have proposed the Sunshine Protection Act to eliminate the need for changing clocks in the fall, but the bill has not been passed.
