Study Reveals Significant Job Losses in L.A. Entertainment Industry, Beyond Strikes

A study by the Otis College of Art and Design has found that 17% of Los Angeles-based entertainment industry workers lost their jobs during the recent strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA. The study also highlights a longer-term decline in Hollywood employment, with the industry's employment shrinking by 26% since August 2022. The strikes accelerated an industry contraction already underway, exacerbating challenges such as oversupply, weaker investment environment, technological disruption, and foreign competition. The full study can be found on the Otis College website.

The goal is to create more opportunities and establish more performance spaces for Sacramento musicians, particularly newer artists. The discussions also emphasized the need for venues of various sizes to support local artists and prevent them from leaving the city for success.

The proposals include preventing studios from having AI programs create scripts independently or rewrite scripts submitted by a human writer, and barring a studio's AI program from training on WGA members' work. The guild's position is that AI-generated material cannot be used as source material or literary material on any project covered by the Basic Agreement.
