"Mickey Mouse Horror Renaissance: Public Domain Sparks Film and Game Adaptations"
Indie horror producers are planning to create a horror-comedy film featuring a sadistic version of the now public domain character, Steamboat Willie, originally known as Mickey Mouse. The film, directed by Steven LaMorte, will depict a twisted take on the character tormenting ferry passengers, with production starting in the spring. Disney's copyright for the original Mickey and Minnie Mouse has expired, but the company maintains rights to later versions and has vowed to protect its trademarks. The producers are cautious to avoid legal issues by not calling the character "Mickey Mouse" and ensuring there is no confusion with Disney's brand. This follows another public domain Mickey Mouse horror-comedy, "Mickey's Mouse Trap," directed by Jamie Bailey.
