The U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division filed its first affirmative lawsuit supporting gun owners, accusing the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department of violating Second Amendment rights by unjustifiably delaying concealed carry permit approvals, with only 2 approvals out of over 8,000 applications and delays up to two years.
Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins has been indicted on federal charges for allegedly accepting cash bribes and campaign contributions in exchange for police credentials that allowed buyers to carry concealed guns nationwide without permits. Jenkins is accused of appointing the bribe payors as auxiliary deputy sheriffs and issuing them badges and identification cards, falsely claiming that these credentials authorized them to carry concealed firearms in all 50 states. Three other men have also been charged in connection with the case. If convicted, Jenkins and the others could face significant prison sentences.
