Oakland Teachers and School District Agree on 'Common Good' Demands During Strike

After seven days of striking, teachers in Oakland have reached an agreement with the Oakland Unified School District on four "common good" demands, including housing and transportation, a community schools grant, a Black thriving community schools initiative, and school closures. The two sides are still in negotiations regarding compensation boosts for staff. The agreement also includes additional support for newcomer students and more school staff. The common good agreement will establish shared governance of community schools, create a task force to identify and expand resources for schools with a 40% or higher Black student population, and commit to following a series of steps before closing another school.

OUSD School Board and Teachers Union Deadlocked in Strike Demands.

Oakland teachers are expected to continue their strike on Tuesday as the school board and union negotiators remain divided on issues beyond compensation, including common good demands such as increased resources for mental health and homeless families, reparations for Black students, and a formal role in deciding how to spend state grant money for community schools. The strike has divided parents and teachers, with some supporting the demands and others calling for an end to the walkout. The school board is split on the issue, with three members supporting the common good demands and three opposing them.
