College President Resigns Amid Sexting Investigation at Coast Guard Academy
The president of Nichols College, Glenn Sulmasy, resigned after CNN revealed allegations of sexual misconduct involving several students he taught at the Coast Guard Academy. Coast Guard attorneys had recommended prosecuting Sulmasy in 2016 for conduct unbecoming an officer and willful dereliction of duty, stemming from sexually suggestive texts he exchanged with an academy student. Additional allegations include using his government email for inappropriate communications and making sexist comments. The Nichols College Board of Trustees stated that pursuing new leadership was in the institution's best interest. The Coast Guard Academy has referred the allegations to the Coast Guard Investigative Service, and a Senate subcommittee has launched an inquiry into the handling of a separate investigation into rapes and sexual assaults at the academy.
