The annual United Nations climate conference, COP28, highlighted the importance of food and agriculture in addressing climate change. The global food supply is facing disruptions from extreme weather events and is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The Innovation Commission for Climate Change, Food Security, and Agriculture identified seven priority areas for innovation, including accurate weather forecasts, microbial fertilizers, and reducing methane emissions from livestock. Other priorities include rainwater harvesting, digital agriculture, alternative proteins, and social protections for farmers. Public and philanthropic investment is needed to scale up these innovations and ensure food security while mitigating climate change.
