New Orleans Archdiocese Settles $230M Clergy Abuse Case

The New Orleans Archdiocese has agreed to a $230 million settlement for clergy sexual abuse survivors, surpassing initial offers, with survivors voting on approval by late October. The settlement aims to resolve years of negotiations and avoid prolonged litigation, with survivors and attorneys largely supporting it, though some express concerns about the adequacy of compensation. The case is part of a broader pattern of Catholic Church bankruptcy cases related to abuse, with the archdiocese's bankruptcy potentially dismissed if the settlement is not approved.

"Pope Francis Faces Church Sex Abuse Scandal During Portugal Visit"

Pope Francis is set to visit Portugal for World Youth Day, but his visit will be overshadowed by the country's legacy of clergy sex abuse. A recent report revealed that at least 4,815 boys and girls had been abused by members of the Portuguese Catholic Church since 1950. The church's response to the scandal has been criticized, with senior officials initially downplaying the extent of the abuse and showing reluctance to offer reparations to victims. The Portuguese hierarchy has also been accused of attempting to cover up the truth. While the pope's official agenda does not mention the scandal, he is expected to meet with victims during his visit.

Illinois AG Report Reveals Widespread Catholic Clergy Sex Abuse Cover-Up

The Catholic Church in Illinois, including the Archdiocese of Chicago, vastly underreported clergy sex abuse, according to a report by Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul. The report found that the church failed to acknowledge hundreds of allegedly abusive priests and other religious figures, with 451 Catholic clerics and religious brothers found to have abused at least 1,997 children across all of the dioceses of Illinois. The investigation was launched in 2018 after a grand jury investigation in Pennsylvania found more than 300 Catholic clergy members there had molested more than 1,000 kids over the preceding decades.
