Australian Bishop Christopher Saunders, emeritus of Broome, has been charged with 19 sexual offences, including rape, unlawful and indecent assault, and indecently dealing with a child as a person in authority. The ongoing investigation, initiated after accusations were made in 2020, is being described as "right and proper, and indeed necessary" by the President of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference. The bishop, who resigned from his post in 2020, was released on bail and ordered to reside at his home until his next hearing in June.
