Chernobyl's Legacy: Ukraine's Ongoing Nuclear Nightmare.
Ukraine's nuclear power plants, including Europe's largest nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, have become a source of safety concerns amid the ongoing conflict between Ukrainian and Russian forces. The International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly called for a demilitarized zone around the Zaporizhzhia plant, which has been repeatedly shelled and damaged, forcing workers to rely on emergency generators for essential nuclear safety functions. Both Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of endangering nuclear safety at the plant, while the IAEA has called for its safe operation. The Chornobyl nuclear power plant, which caused the world's worst civilian nuclear disaster in 1986, remains a source of horror and has become a tourist attraction since it was deemed safe to visit in 2011.
