Child Shooter Brags About Attack, Affidavit Reveals

A 6-year-old boy who shot his teacher in January at a Virginia elementary school later boasted about it, according to unsealed search warrants. The teacher survived the incident but suffered gunshot wounds to her hand and chest. The documents also revealed a previous incident where the same child apparently choked a different teacher. The child's family claims he has extreme emotional issues and is receiving therapy. The mother of the student has pleaded guilty to federal gun charges and will be sentenced in October.

Virginia teacher recounts harrowing experience of being shot by 6-year-old student.

Abigail Zwerner, a teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Virginia, who was shot by a six-year-old student, has spoken publicly for the first time about the incident. She plans to sue the school district after being shot through her hand and upper chest following what police described as an "altercation" with the first-grader. The teacher's lawyer alleges that school leaders had been warned multiple times that the student had a firearm, and that the school failed to adequately respond. The child brought the gun in his backpack to the school. The firearm was legally purchased and belonged to the child's mother, police have said.

Virginia teacher Abigail Zwerner shares her recovery journey after being shot by student.

A first-grade teacher in Virginia, Abigail Zwerner, was shot by a 6-year-old student in her classroom. Despite being seriously wounded, she quickly collected the other children and ushered them to safety. Zwerner is undergoing physical therapy and is uncertain whether her hand will function as it once had. A lawyer representing Zwerner said she expects to file a lawsuit in two weeks after she sent the Newport News school board an intent-to-sue notice almost three weeks after the shooting. Newport News Commonwealth's Attorney Howard Gwynn said he wouldn't seek charges against the 6-year-old given that a child that young wouldn't have the competency to understand the legal system or adequately assist an attorney.
