Pirates make roster moves, designate De Jong and send Owings to Indianapolis.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated right-hander Chase De Jong for assignment and recalled outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba from Triple-A Indianapolis. De Jong had a good season in 2021 but has struggled this year, posting a 13.50 ERA in 11 1/3 innings. He was previously designated for assignment in May but cleared waivers and was outrighted to Indianapolis. If he clears waivers again, he may elect free agency or accept an outright assignment.

Pirates Make Pitching Moves, Select De Jong and Perdomo, Designate Owings.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have selected the contract of right-hander Chase De Jong and optioned Yerry De Los Santos to Triple-A Indianapolis. De Jong has pitched to a 2.70 ERA in 43 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level while posting a 4.33 ERA in 124 2/3 innings of work at the big league level. De Los Santos returns to Triple-A after recording two outs for the Pirates in yesterday’s game.

Pirates lose Vince Velasquez to injured list, call up Chase De Jong.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed right-hander Vince Velasquez on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation. Infielder Drew Maggi has been outrighted to Double-A Altoona, while righty Chase De Jong has been reinstated from his own IL stint. Velasquez's absence will require the Pirates to find a fifth starter to join Mitch Keller, Roansy Contreras, Rich Hill, and Johan Oviedo. Maggi cleared waivers and has the right to reject the assignment and elect free agency.
