The developers of Super Mario Bros. Wonder discussed character selection and a scrapped Yoshi mechanic in a recent interview. Director Shiro Mouri explained that the game features a wide variety of characters to allow players to choose their favorites and enhance the online experience. The team initially included core characters from previous titles and added new ones like Peach, Daisy, and different colored Yoshis to balance the roster. A Yoshi egg-throwing mechanic was tested but ultimately removed for simplicity and to ensure the game remained accessible to new players. Producer Takashi Tezuka and Mouri also mentioned the removal of the game's timer, aiming to refine the gameplay experience.
