Shaddock's catamaran was damaged in a storm while en route to French Polynesia from Mexico. The pair were spotted by a helicopter and taken aboard a tuna trawler. Shaddock, a cancer survivor, appeared emaciated but in good health. The ordeal has been compared to the movie "Cast Away," with Shaddock's living companion, Bella, being credited for helping him endure the challenging experience.
