The U.S. Treasury has sanctioned key members and an associate of the violent Mexican cartel Cartel del Noreste (formerly Los Zetas), targeting their roles in drug trafficking, violence, and human smuggling, with efforts to disrupt their operations and revenue streams.
The mutilated remains of up to a dozen people were found in Monterrey, Mexico, suggesting a gang purge. The discovery comes after a decrease in violence in recent years. Messages left with the remains indicate an attempt to infiltrate the Northeast Cartel, a Tamaulipas-based cartel known for drug trafficking and terrorizing migrants. The cartel's leader was arrested earlier this year, leading to rival gangs trying to take advantage of the power vacuum.
