Decoding the Mystery of Noisy Carbon Wheels

The whoosh-whoosh sound produced by carbon wheels is a result of resonance, which is influenced by construction methods, materials, and cavity volume. Deep-profile rims are louder because they have a larger surface area that can vibrate and move air to create noise. Construction techniques, such as tension in the sidewall or disc brake wheel skin, also affect the loudness of the wheels. Additionally, the use of low-temperature resins with rubber or elastomer additives in modern wheels increases damping and reduces noise. Tubeless tires and disc brakes also play a role in reducing wheel noise.

Zipp Introduces Tyre-Friendly XC Wheelsets with Enhanced Compliance

Zipp has released their new 1Zero HiTop carbon wheels, designed for cross-country (XC) racing and lighter-duty trail riding. The HiTop SW and HiTop S versions feature a unique rim profile for compliance and comfort, with the SW model being lighter and equipped with the TyreWiz 2.0 tire pressure monitoring system. The wheels are relatively light but not the lightest in the XC wheelset category. Initial impressions suggest a zippy feel on the trail, although they may feel undergunned in fast and rough conditions. The S version may be preferred due to its 6-bolt hubs and exclusion of the TyreWiz 2.0. Further testing and comparisons with competitors are forthcoming.
