Chicago Fire Department Mourns Loss of Two Firefighters Due to Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.
Autopsies have revealed that Chicago firefighters Jermaine Pelt and Lt. Jan Tchoryk died from carbon monoxide toxicity and hypertensive-arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, respectively, while responding to fires on the Far South and Near North Sides this week. Pelt had been with the Chicago Fire Department since 2005 and Tchoryk was an outdoorsman and Navy veteran who served in Desert Storm. Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the back-to-back tragedies "unprecedented."
