Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are competing for dominance in car dashboards, offering similar interfaces and app options. Both platforms provide maps, media, and messaging apps, with slight variations in third-party app support. Google Assistant and Siri are available for voice commands, and Android Auto offers more customization options than Apple CarPlay. However, Apple has plans to enhance CarPlay with integrated vehicle instruments, additional widgets, multiple display support, and a built-in FM radio app in late 2023.
Android Auto users are reporting that Google has lifted the restriction that prevented Google Maps from being displayed on both a phone and car dashboard simultaneously. Previously, Google Maps on Android Auto only showed limited information on the car display, such as turn-by-turn navigation and music controls. This feature was briefly available in February before being removed, but it seems to have returned. The change allows passengers to use the fully functional Google Maps app on their connected phone, providing more detailed directions while on the road. Apple Maps, in comparison, offers a similar feature but with more limited information.
