BioWare Confirms Layoffs and Developer Change for Star Wars MMO

BioWare has confirmed layoffs within the Star Wars: The Old Republic development team as the game prepares to transition to a new developer, Broadsword Online Games. The agreement sees SWTOR handed over to current Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot developer Broadsword Online, which is run by former Mythic Entertainment co-founder and BioWare VP Rob Denton, who previously worked on SWTOR in its early days. BioWare general manager Gary McKay confirmed an undisclosed number of layoffs are set to hit those who do not transition from the studio to Broadsword.

BioWare shifts focus away from Star Wars MMO to Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

Electronic Arts is reportedly close to moving Star Wars: The Old Republic from BioWare to Broadsword Online Games, which already manages the online development and operations of EA's classic MMOs Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot. Broadsword's founder and president is an ex-BioWare executive who also founded former EA-owned studio Mythic Entertainment. Over half of the game's core development team of up to 80 people are expected to move with the game to Broadsword, while the remaining staff may face layoffs if they can't find another position within EA. EA is reportedly keen for BioWare to focus on upcoming single-player games like Dragon Age: Dreadwolf and Mass Effect 4.
