Migrant Surge Continues: Border Agents Overwhelmed as Numbers Grow

Asylum-seekers, including migrants from China, Ecuador, Brazil, and Colombia, are overwhelming border agents on the US-Mexico border, leading to the closure of border crossings in several areas. After a decline in illegal crossings following new asylum restrictions in May, the Biden administration is facing a surge in arrivals. To address the situation, the administration is granting Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelans, deploying additional military troops to the border, expanding holding facilities, and seeking emergency funding from Congress. The influx of families has resulted in unacceptable conditions, including short-term separations, and may have lasting harmful effects on children. Border crossings and rail traffic have been disrupted, and campsites for migrants have reemerged near Jacumba Hot Springs.

FBI Investigates Fatal Shooting of Native Man by Border Patrol in Arizona

The FBI and federal border officials are investigating the fatal shooting of a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation by U.S. border agents on the reservation in Arizona near the U.S.-Mexico border. The shooting occurred after the man called the authorities because multiple migrants had trespassed into his yard. The killing comes as the United States has been bracing for an increase in asylum seekers crossing the southern border. The Tohono O’odham Nation occupies nearly 3 million acres in southwestern Arizona and includes about 28,000 members.
