Republic Steel Halts Steelmaking Operations in Multiple Locations, Hundreds Face Furloughs
Republic Steel, owned by Grupo Simec, has indefinitely idled its steelmaking operations at its mills in Blasdell and Canton, Ohio, resulting in 500 employees losing their jobs. The decision was attributed to competitive market pricing, decreased demand, increasing input costs, and the challenges of ensuring future environmental compliance in aging facilities. Republic Steel's U.S. customers will now be served by its steel mill in Tlaxcala, Mexico.
