Sinners Shatters Oscar Nominations Record With 16 Nods
Sinners, a supernatural thriller from Ryan Coogler, set a new Oscar nominations record with 16 nods, surpassing the previous 14; nominations span best picture, director, acting (lead and supporting), screenplay, casting, production design, cinematography, costume design, editing, makeup and hair, sound, visual effects, original score, and original song for “I Lied to You.” The haul delivers historic milestones for Coogler and collaborators: he becomes one of the few Black filmmakers nominated for producing, directing and original screenplay in the same year, Zinzi Coogler becomes the first Filipino producer and third Black woman nominated for best picture, Autumn Durald Arkapaw is the first Filipino woman and first woman of color nominated for cinematography, and Ruth E. Carter adds a fifth nomination, making her the most-nominated Black woman in Oscar history. Final voting runs Feb. 26–March 5 ahead of the March 15 ceremony on ABC.
