Scientists from San Jose State University have discovered that alcohol chemical groups on the surface of nanodiamonds are responsible for the formation of uniform silica shells. By using powerful X-rays, they were able to unravel the bonding mechanism and understand how the shell forms. This finding could lead to the creation of better silica-coated nanodiamonds, expanding their applications in quantum computing and biolabeling. The researchers also plan to explore other materials as coatings for nanodiamonds, such as titanium and zinc, to further enhance their properties.
