Man sentenced to 8 years in jail for hurling racial slurs at neighbors in viral video
Edward Cagney Mathews, a white man from New Jersey, has been sentenced to eight years in prison, with four years to be served, for hurling racial slurs at his black neighbors in a viral video. Mathews, who pleaded guilty to four counts of bias intimidation and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, sobbed in court and apologized for his "insensitive and disrespectful words." The incident occurred during a dispute with his condo complex's homeowners' association. Mathews had a history of racially motivated harassment, including using racial slurs, vandalizing property, and sending threatening letters. He will be credited for the time already served and will undergo racial sensitivity training in prison.
