AMD EPYC Bergamo and Genoa-X: Unleashing Unprecedented Performance

AMD has released the EPYC 9754 processor, part of the Bergamo lineup, which offers up to 128 cores and 256 threads per socket. The processor, built on the Zen 4C core architecture, aims to maximize core density and power efficiency, making it appealing to cloud service providers. With the ability to provide up to 16 cores per CCD, Bergamo offers improved performance compared to previous Genoa processors. The EPYC 9754 has a base clock of 2.25GHz, an all-core boost speed of 3.1GHz, and a maximum boost clock of 3.1GHz, with a configurable TDP of 320 to 400 Watts. The processor is priced at $11,900 USD.

AMD's Zen 4c cores face skepticism from Amazon in Bergamo processors.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is not interested in deploying AMD's 128-core Bergamo processors in its datacenters, despite the conventional wisdom that higher core counts increase earning potential. AWS prefers to standardize around the CPU, whether it be Intel's, AMD's, or its own homegrown Graviton silicon. AWS VP David Brown said that with higher core counts, other parts of the server get very expensive, and with the move to DDR5, there are even more challenges. However, Brown emphasized that this philosophy isn't set in stone.

AMD's AI chip gains traction as Meta and Taiwan chipmakers show promising demand.

AMD has started shipping its "Bergamo" central processor, which has been adopted by Meta. The chip targets a different part of AMD's data center business, where it hopes to compete against Nvidia with a new "superchip" that analysts expect it to detail on Tuesday. AMD's most advanced graphics processing unit (GPU), the MI300, is also expected to be detailed. However, analysts say AMD will have to catch up on both software and research trends to compete with Nvidia's lead in the AI computing market.
