Australian company Fortescue plans to invest $210 million to develop an electric vehicle battery assembly plant in Detroit, reviving a vacant auto factory and potentially creating up to 600 new jobs by 2030. The project will be located near the historic Ford Piquette Plant and aims to contribute to the clean energy industry.
Ford's Oakville plant in Ontario will begin its $1.3 billion transformation into an electric vehicle assembly plant in Q2 2024, with an estimated 3,000 workers to be furloughed during the six-month retooling process. The factory will be renamed the Oakville Electric Vehicle Complex and will include a battery assembly plant. Ford has an ambitious goal to produce 600,000 EVs annually starting in 2024, accelerating to 2 million a year by the start of 2027, with the goal of achieving 50 percent of total sales by 2030.
