Researchers at the University of Waterloo's Institute for Quantum Computing have developed a groundbreaking technique using laser light to control individual barium qubits with unprecedented precision. The new method utilizes a small glass waveguide to separate laser beams and focus them on individual qubits, minimizing crosstalk and allowing for independent control over each qubit. Barium ions were chosen for their convenient energy states and compatibility with visible green light, enabling the use of commercially available optical technologies. This advancement in qubit control brings us closer to realizing functional quantum computers.
