Mattel has released more Barbie dolls inspired by characters from the movie, including a notable doll called Weird Barbie, played by Kate McKinnon, featuring marker on the face and a haphazard haircut.
Barbara Lakin, a volunteer with Team TLC NYC, is sewing unique, couture outfits for discarded Barbie dolls to give to migrant girls who have traveled to the US border fleeing dangerous situations in Central or South America. Lakin believes that having a toy, especially in these circumstances, can provide comfort and a sense of normalcy for these children. The Little Shop of Kindness, opened by Team TLC NYC, provides free necessities for migrants and offers the Barbies as special gifts. Lakin hopes to receive more donations of Black and brown Barbies to better represent the girls who will receive them. While the dolls cannot erase the trauma these children have experienced, they can provide a moment of joy and remind them of their worth.
