Exploring Bacterial Metabolism through Gaming.

BacterAI, an integrated lab automation and machine learning platform, could help overcome the challenges of culturing understudied microorganisms by learning appropriate culture conditions as a game. Currently, fewer than 2% of all microbial species are culturable due to a lack of knowledge about growth requirements and the tedious, labour-intensive experiments that stand in the way of this essential knowledge. BacterAI could be the future of studying microbial diversity and discovering novel bioactive molecules such as antibiotics.

Study Shows AI Can Conduct One Million Microbial Experiments Annually.

An AI system called BacterAI has enabled robots to conduct up to 10,000 autonomous scientific experiments per day, potentially driving a drastic leap forward in the pace of discovery in areas from medicine to agriculture to environmental science. The system mapped the metabolism of two microbes associated with oral health, discovering the amino acid requirements for the growth of both Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus sanguinis. BacterAI creates its own data set through a series of experiments, analyzing the results of previous trials to come up with predictions of what new experiments might give it the most information.

AI revolutionizes microbial experimentation with BacterAI.

BacterAI is an automated science platform that maps microbial metabolism without prior knowledge. It learns by converting scientific questions into simple games that it plays with laboratory robots and distills its findings into logical rules that can be interpreted by human scientists. BacterAI was used to learn the amino acid requirements for two oral streptococci and can accelerate when investigating new environments or larger media with up to 39 ingredients.
