Unprecedented Flooding Strikes Far North Queensland as Cyclone Jasper Hits

Severe Tropical Cyclone Jasper, the first named storm and severe tropical cyclone of the 2023–24 Australian region cyclone season, has impacted northern Queensland as a remnant low. The cyclone originated from an area of low pressure in the South Pacific Ocean and quickly intensified to a Category 4 tropical cyclone before weakening due to wind shear. Jasper made landfall as a Category 2 tropical cyclone near Wujal Wujal, causing power outages, flooding, and damage to properties. The storm brought heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving over 800 mm (31.6 in) of rain. The full extent of the damage is yet to be determined.
