Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has been named the Associated Press 2023 NFL Assistant Coach of the Year for his role in leading the league's top-rated defense. Schwartz's aggressive scheme propelled the Browns to first in yards allowed, tied for fifth in takeaways, and sixth in sacks. The team also led the league in first downs allowed, third-down and fourth-down conversion rates, and three-and-out percentage. Despite a season plagued by injuries and multiple starting quarterbacks, the Browns made the playoffs, with Schwartz's defense playing a pivotal role. This accolade adds to Schwartz's successful career, which includes a Super Bowl ring with the Eagles in 2017.
