Repeat Offender Charged in Deadly Pedestrian Crash in Asheville

Bernie Chan Rogers has been charged for the second time in less than a year for striking and killing a pedestrian with his vehicle. The Asheville Police Department arrested Rogers for the recent incident in which he hit and killed Jason Matthew Perry on Sweeten Creek Road. Rogers is also facing charges for a previous incident in which he struck and killed Jason Dean Wyatt while driving on Patton Avenue. He is currently being held in the Haywood County Detention Facility.

Repeat Offender Charged in Deadly Asheville Crash

Bernie Chan Rogers, a 27-year-old man, has been charged with Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle and Failure to Reduce Speed following a deadly crash in south Asheville. The incident occurred on Sweeten Creek Road on October 18, 2023, when a tow truck struck and killed 46-year-old Jason Matthew Perry, who was assisting a motorcyclist involved in a previous collision. Rogers was arrested by the Haywood County Sheriff's Office and is currently held on a $20,000 secured bond.

Teenager Faces Felony Charges in Fatal Asheville Cyclist Incident

An 18-year-old man, Jayden Saleem Smith, has been charged with felony hit-and-run, misdemeanor death by vehicle, and other offenses after a collision that killed a bicyclist on Hendersonville Road. Smith attempted to pass another vehicle using the turn lane, resulting in a head-on collision with the cyclist, Patrick Jeffery Leroy. Smith fled the scene but was later located. Leroy was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Smith turned himself in and is being held on a $25,000 bond.
