Historic Christmas Trees Fetch Thousands in Auctions
An auction for a 31-inch artificial Christmas tree, believed to be one of the world's first mass-produced artificial trees, has sold for over $4,300—around 50 times its estimated asking price. The tree, considered "the humblest Christmas tree in the world," was purchased by an unnamed buyer in the UK who plans to give it "a new festive life." The tree's origin story dates back to 1920 when it was bought for less than a dime by the family of 8-year-old Dorothy Grant. After Grant's death in 2014, the tree was passed on to her daughter and eventually put up for auction. The high bidding is attributed to the power of nostalgia and the sentimental value attached to the tree.
