"Spanish Museum Retains Nazi-Looted Painting Despite Heirs' Legal Battle"

A US court has ruled that Spain can keep a Nazi-looted painting, "Rue Saint-Honoré in the Afternoon. Effect of Rain," by impressionist Camille Pissarro, which was looted from its Jewish owner during WWII. The decision, which has been a decadeslong battle, has shocked the family and prompted one of the judges to express conflict with her "moral compass." The painting, now housed in Madrid's Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, is estimated to be worth around $30 million. The family is disappointed with the decision and plans to challenge Spain's insistence on harboring Nazi-looted art, while the museum welcomed the ruling, arguing that they were unaware of the painting's stolen history when it was acquired.

Restitution: Croatian Museums Return Nazi-Looted Art to Jewish Heirs

Three museums in Zagreb, Croatia, have returned artworks looted from a Jewish businessman during the Holocaust to his grandson, Andy Reichsman, marking the first reported Holocaust-era art restitution in the country. The returned works include paintings by André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck, as well as lithographs by Picasso, Cézanne, and others. Croatia's Jewish community was decimated during the Holocaust, and for decades, the country had deflected claims for looted art. However, a joint report by the Croatian government and the World Jewish Restitution Organization last year acknowledged the thefts and listed stolen collections.

Kandinsky Painting Recommended for Return to Jewish Heirs by German Panel.

The German government's advisory panel on Nazi-looted art has recommended that a painting by Wassily Kandinsky, "Colorful Life," be returned to the heirs of a Jewish family who suffered persecution under the Nazis in the Netherlands during World War II. The painting was part of an extensive art collection belonging to Emanuel Albert Lewenstein and his wife, Hedwig Lewenstein Weyermann, and was auctioned off in 1940. The painting has been hanging in a museum in Munich since 1972, on loan from a state-owned bank, BayernLB. The bank has not committed to following the panel's recommendation, which is not legally binding.
