Jim's West Steaks & Hoagies, a Philadelphia cheesesteak restaurant, has hired armed guards carrying assault rifles to protect customers due to a surge in violent crime in the city. The guards will be stationed outside the eatery during business hours from Thursday to Sunday each week. While some customers support the added security, others express concerns about the optics and family-friendliness. The restaurant had previously been targeted by armed robbers in 2015. Homicides in Philadelphia have decreased by 20% since last year, but eight of the slayings occurred within a 10-block radius of Jim's West Steaks & Hoagies.

Texas and Oklahoma propose bills to increase school safety measures.

Texas lawmakers have advanced a bill proposing stipends of up to $25,000 for public school staff members who become designated guardians authorized to carry or possess a weapon while working on the premises. The bill would allow teachers and staff of public and open-enrollment charter schools within the state to be eligible for the School Guardian Training stipend. Approved employees would ultimately be agreeing to acting as campus security in addition to their regular role(s). Other school safety measures advancing in the Texas legislature include requiring at least one armed person on all public school campuses.

Nashville shooting sparks calls for increased school security and political turmoil.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee plans to expand a school safety measure to include the placement of school resource officers at every school in the state following the recent shooting at a private Christian school in Nashville. The governor's plan would expand a proposal to place an armed guard, otherwise known as a school resource officer, at every public school in Tennessee and offer state funding for private schools to hire an armed guard. The new plan would also seek additional mental health support through school-based behavioral health liaisons.
