Florida's Attempt to Modify AP Courses on Gender and Sexuality Rejected by College Board

The College Board rejected Florida's request to modify "gender identity and sexual orientation" content in an Advanced Placement Psychology course, citing that doing so would break the fundamental promise of AP. The request was made by the Florida Department of Education Office of Articulation, which had asked the College Board to audit and potentially modify AP courses relative to the new Florida laws that restrict classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity. The College Board stated that the learning objective within AP Psychology that covers gender and sexual orientation must remain a required topic, just as it has been in Florida for many years.

College Board Stands Firm on AP Course Content Amid Florida Regulations

The College Board has refused to modify its Advanced Placement (AP) courses to comply with Florida's new rules banning classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity. The state had asked the College Board to consider modifying AP courses with lessons that might run afoul of the new rules. The College Board said it was "heartbroken" by the possibility that Florida students might not be able to take AP psychology, which includes a unit on gender and sexual orientation. The organization said it would not modify its courses to accommodate restrictions on teaching essential, college-level topics.

Florida's Education System Undergoes Major Changes and Controversies.

Florida lawmakers are allocating $2.8 million to develop a state-run program to rival the College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) courses and exams, and are also considering allowing students to take the Classic Learning Test (CLT) in lieu of the SAT or ACT. These moves come after Gov. Ron DeSantis criticized the College Board for including courses on queer theory and intersectionality in an emerging course surrounding Black history. The proposed legislation would allow students to take the CLT to qualify for the state's Bright Futures Scholarship and school districts to offer the CLT for free to grade 11 students.
