Rampant Anti-Black Racism Floods Chinese Social Media, Watchdog Reports
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has found that Chinese social media platforms, including Bilibili, Douyin, Kuaishou, Weibo, and Xiaohongshu, are filled with racist videos that mock black people and perpetuate offensive racial stereotypes. The content often portrays African countries as primitive or impoverished, with Chinese people depicted as wealthy saviors. Interracial relationships between black men and Chinese women are also denigrated. Chinese women who post photos with their black partners face online harassment, including death threats and doxing. Despite community guidelines banning racial or ethnic hatred, HRW argues that these policies are inadequate, and the platforms fail to address pervasive racist content. Chinese authorities have condemned online racism but critics argue that hate speech against black people on Chinese social media is often overlooked.
