Turkey's Retaliatory Strikes: From Ankara to Iraq
Following the bombing in Ankara claimed by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), Turkey launched air strikes on militant targets in northern Iraq and conducted raids in Istanbul, detaining 20 suspects. The air strikes destroyed 20 PKK targets in Iraq's Metina, Hakurk, Qandil, and Gara regions. The Iraqi president rejected the Turkish air strikes and the presence of Turkish bases in the Kurdistan region, expressing hope for a diplomatic solution. The PKK, designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU, has been engaged in an insurgency in southeast Turkey since 1984.
